The 2018 Intramural CrossFit Open

The 2018 CrossFit Open is almost here!  For those of you who don’t know, the Open is a five week long fitness party where hundreds of thousands of athletes at CrossFit boxes worldwide participate every year.  Technically speaking, The Open is the first stage of competition for athletes that ultimately want to compete in the CrossFit Games (the shit you see on ESPN), but for all of us non-professional athletes, the Open is really just a fun time to workout, banter, and enjoy the camaraderie of a team environment.

Team environment?  What say you of this!?  

This year marks the first time we’ll hold an Intramural CrossFit Open where we divide the gym into two teams that compete against each other.  

But before we get into the details of how the Intramural Open is going to work, let’s take a step back and answer some general questions some of you may have.

Is the Open only for serious athletes?

No, just like in class, there is an Rx and Scaled version of each workout—same goes for the Open.  The goal is all about participation and having fun.  If you’ve ever played team sports, you know how fun being a part of a team can be!

Do I have to pay to participate?

No, there is no cost to participate.  We’ll program the Open workouts during group class, so you’ll do them regardless.  If you want to officially register for the CrossFit Open, it will cost you $20 through the main CrossFit website.  You can create an account to track, verify and score all of the workouts.  If you ever plan to compete fo realz in CrossFit, this is a must do.

We’ll have a rad Open 18 t-shirt, which you can pre-order for $25 and it will definitely make you perform 15% better due to the secret nanotechnology fibers and chill design.

What if my goals don’t involve me competing in CrossFit?

This is not the TV show Survivor; no one is getting voted off.  You don’t have to even consider yourself an athlete to compete.  The goal here is to have fun and to be a part of something.  You don’t have to be training for the NFL to play a flag football game and you don’t have to be training for CrossFit to enjoy the Open!

When do the workouts happen?

Starting Feb 22nd, one workout is released each week.  Technically speaking you have 4 days to complete the workout, but because we want an awesome environment, we will be holding the workouts every Friday night starting at 6:00pm (#FridayNightLights).  If you absolutely cannot make it, we will hold a make up session for the workout on the following Saturday.  There will be NO other make up days!

Ok, now that we’ve answered some of the basic questions, let’s dig into the Intramural Open and learn why it’s the best thing since avocado toast!

The Intramural Open

The gym will be divided into two teams:

Team Blind Tiger will be captained by Hannah Farrow.

Team Bad Monkey will be captained by Samantha Morse.

Because we want evenly divided teams, we’ve outlined a handful of competitive athletes who will be drafted to each team by the team captains.

The draft will happen live on Saturday, Feb 3rd from 10:00am to 10:30am before our group class. The draft will be a fun time, so make sure to show up and support.  Once the competitive athletes are drafted, it’s open recruitment for the rest of us.  Team captains will reach out to you and try to get you to join their team.

Skill Sessions

To get everyone #openready, we’ll hold two skill sessions leading up to the Open on Saturday, Feb 10th and Saturday Feb 17th from 10am to 11:30am.  We will have as many coaches on the floor as we can to help you get your first double under, toes to bar, muscle up, etc.  There is no cost for these sessions if you are participating on a team.  If you’re not a team, you owe us your entire 401k.


The winning team will be announced after the final Open workout.  Points will be earned from the following rubric.

1 Point: For each team member that shows up and completes a workout (Rx or Scaled).

1 Point: If you score in the top 3 in the gym for male or females (must complete as Rx).

5 Points: For the team that wins the Spirit of the Open Award.

The Spirit of the Open Award will be awarded weekly based off a specific challenge that is given.  We’ll announce the weekly challenge during Friday Night Lights and your team captains will organize through the Facebook group that will be set up.
